Knowing what to do in the event of a dental emergency can not only minimize pain but also reduce the odds of losing a tooth or requiring complex treatment. Here is expert advice on what to do when faced with common dental emergencies.
1. Chipped Tooth
Don’t panic if a bad fall or some other accident results in a chipped tooth. Pick up any broken pieces, rinse them off with water and save them to take with you to a dentist. Stop any bleeding using a clean piece of gauze, and call an emergency dentist for an appointment as soon as possible.
2. Cracked Tooth
If a tooth cracks, rinse your mouth out with water to prevent bacteria from lodging in the open space. Use cold compresses to reduce any swelling.
3. Knocked-Out Tooth
A tooth that has been totally knocked out of the mouth should be rinsed with water if it is dirty and then carefully re-inserted into the gum. If it is not possible to put the tooth back in your gum, put it in a cup of milk or a cup of water with a pinch of salt. See a dentist within an hour, as this increases the odds of being able to successfully return the tooth to its socket. Additional treatment may be needed after tooth is reinserted.
4. Toothache
Toothaches may happen for a number of reasons. If food is stuck between your teeth, use dental floss to remove it. Never insert tweezers or any other sharp object in your mouth, as you could scratch your teeth and/or gums. If you suspect you may have a cavity, then thoroughly rinse your mouth with water and see your dentist for a check-up. If you experience pain, you can apply a cold compress to your cheeks or gums. However, never put any type of painkiller directly on your teeth or gums, because this could burn the gum tissue.
5. Lost Filling
Did you lose a filling? Fill the area where it fell out with sugarless gum or dental cement or dental wax. The latter product can be purchased at just about any pharmacy without a prescription. Call a dentist to evaluate the tooth.
